Oct. 15th, 2005 @ 03:34 am Shake-ups in my online games.
Until last Monday, I had played on Euro Bet's poker site. It was a skin of Party Poker. In other words, it was a different doorway to the Party Poker tables, and the soft competition that plays there. I accessed these tables via Euro Bet because I had an arrangement with an affiliate to get 25% of my rake returned to me (about $600 per month). On Monday, Party separated from the common network used by Party and its skins. So now the players left on Euro Bet are the tougher, tighter, multi-tabler variety like me, and I’m forced to choose between playing in tough games with rakeback, and playing in soft games with no rakeback. Danny gets 20% of my rake from my party account, so I suppose I could at least play on Party and get 20%, but I liked the arrangement with my affiliate on Euro Bet, since the money was deposited into my account and I had control of it. When I got rakeback from Danny, I didn’t like having to ask him for it. Anyway, I’m forced to deal with the whole mess of converting an existing Party account to one with my current Euro Bet affiliate. This involves clumsy transfers of money and inaccessibility of funds... basically a huge pain in the ass. I’ve played break even this week and I feel like everything around me is disorganized. You know when you get that feeling that you have to tie up every loose end around you, because you’ve been so bothered by them all. I think I get this way when I feel out of control. I just want all my money to be available and I want to be playing where I’m getting rakeback. I’m off to go put a dent in my to-do-list.

Oct. 8th, 2005 @ 01:33 pm Stacked with Daniel Negraneau (And Showgirls!)
I responded to a craigslist advert to participate in some sort of poker game for MTV. It turns out it’s a show for Stacked (a new video game) with Daniel Negraneau as the host. It was shot at the Aladdin and he dealt to a table of us while we all played a mock game with the new VJ Susie. The game was pretty silly, and I’m sure I'll come out looking like a poser on the show, but I had to play like a dumb little groupie since none of the other players knew what they were doing. So I either had to act like a dumb little groupie or some sort of asshole-know-it-all. It was interesting spending a bit of time with Daniel. A few years ago, I saw him on Fox sports at a final table. A few months afterwards, I made my first trip to Vegas with Amanda, and while playing at Bellagio, I recognized Daniel. I didn’t even know his name at the time, but he was the first "poker celeb" I ever recognized in person. Now that I've moved to Vegas, I’ve seen or met nearly every recognizable TV player, so it’s not such a big deal anymore. But I had to pretend it was a big deal when the writer for the show asked me "What do you expect in your game today with DANIEL!" I’m giving an interview for national TV. I can’t say, "I see him once a week and I’ve lost my boner to meet pseudo-celebrities."

Speaking of meeting celebrities; if I were to have the opportunity to meet any celebrity I wanted, Mila Kunis would have to be in the top three. After shooting our game with Daniel, I think they were going to do a similar shoot with a table full of celebs, Mila included. I’m sure I could have talked my way onto the set, but I was exhausted after shooting for five hours. Besides, I had just been shot down by one of the Jubilee showgirls. We had four 5'11" showgirls in the background pretending to play slot machines (in regular clothes of course). After that I wasn’t in the mood to be escorted out of the Aladdin by security for trying to hit on Mila Kunis, but maybe I was taking the rejection a bit hard at the time. So I might have to re-evaluate my standards. BTW, I’m pretty disappointed in myself for the extremely weak game I brought when trying to hook up with one of them. Note regarding showgirls: don’t ask them for tickets when trying to pick them up. Maybe I should buy a book on this bullshit. That way when it goes wrong I have someone else to blame.

On the bright side, I did get to meet some new people and network a bit, which was really the only motivation for doing this little project in the first place.

No, not gay porn. Before going to the movies with Danny, I sat and played a little stud eight or better (.50/1) on eurobet, which got me thinking about methods for remembering all the cards delt in a stud hand. I was thankfully refered to this thread by a nice 2+2er. Eventhough I'd like to test out the methods at a stud table, I've got to get some hours in at 2/4 holdem today.

I'm desperately fighting the urge to go play at Wynn today. I went friday, and lost $150 in the last half hour. Maybe I do have a gambling problem, since I cant abstain drinking and playing low EV, high variance games. Miraculously I've put together $1200 to play 2/4 online but Ive only been playing break-even for the past three days. I can't go out gambling after working for free for three days. I like to rationalize going out by saying "I need to get out and meet people." Really it's just a distraction keeping me from playing profitably. I'm also getting my ass handed to me in my 2/4 games right now. I can't go.

Nov. 1st, 2004 @ 06:39 pm The Big Slide
I got a couple more sessions in Sunday night, losing during both. I three tabled 2/4 today after school and got some of it back. Up to this point in the quest, the biggest downward slide has been 78 BB.

I actually went to class today. I think this quest, along with some other things going on in my life have really shaped me up to work harder academically... which of course, was the entire goal. Even though I’m in a bit of a slide right now, I’m ahead of pace, my earn rate is still too good to be sustainable and I feel like I have a shot of being successful and graduating in May. So tonight, I’m going to try and complete some diff eq, and get to bed on time so I can go complete a calorimetry lab tomorrow.

Oct. 31st, 2004 @ 03:45 pm Rough Weekend
I got my lab complete and turned in Friday. I'm worried I have some tests this week for which I'm not prepared. I need to get in contact with some classmates and see what the material covered will be... then I'll have to cram like crazy. I really hate cramming, but Ive just been too busy catching up so far to do extra studying.

While Ive had mixed results studying, my rush at cards has ended. After I turned my lab in Friday, I sat down to play some 2/4. I lost $124.75 in the session. After that I got invited to a home NL tournement. Entry was $13 with unlimited rebuys for the first half hour. I was into the game $39 before busting out tenth or so (out of the money). A 1/2 NL live game developed after the tournement and we played until morning. I left that game up $110.

Playing no limit for those hours really helped me to understand why I hate it so much. It really is boring. I have to sit and wait for a premium hand, then, once it comes, play it passively in order to trap opponents. I only feel comfortable letting the chips fly when I have very near the nuts, since I have to avoid being trapped myself. When this rare situation comes around that I have very near the nuts, there are only rarely times that my opponents have made second best hands. I told a friend after the game that I honestly believed that there was less to think about in NL than in limit; he was shocked. Most of your tough decisions in NL can be boiled down to do I have the best hand, or the second best hand? In limit (especially low limits) there are many more multiway pots, so you have to do more hand reading and you have more opportunities to be creative when it comes to using your position relative to the field for trapping, isolating, bluffing, ect.

I woke up early this morning and decided to play some 3/6, along with a couple of Party Poker Million single table $32 qualifiers. I busted out pretty quickly in both of the qualifiers, but managed to win $71.50 in the cash games. For purposes of record keeping, Im not going to include live games or the tournaments, since it would be difficult to include them and have an accurate BB/100 calculation. It shouldnt be too much of an issue, since I dont expect to play many tournaments or live games during the quest.

Oct. 28th, 2004 @ 10:15 pm Still Moving Forward
I played some 2/4 before bed last night. Since I didn't have class today, I was able to stay up late and sleep in. I four tabled for about 45 minutes and netted $63. I also played a 45 minute session tonight. One table was 1/2, since the average pot size was initially over $20. The three other tables were 2/4.

At the 1/2 table, I quickly realized there was a maniac sitting to my left. Some don't like sitting in this spot, but I actually prefer it to the maniac being on my right. When the maniac is on my right, I can try to isolate him with my marginally good hands which I would prefer to play short handed the operative word being "try." When what I'm trying succeeds, I'll typically win a small pot against the maniac, and less often lose a slightly larger pot to him. I don’t think this situation is as profitable as having the maniac on your left. When he's on my left, I have to be more selective with my starting hands, since I have to be willing to play for two and often three bets preflop. When I do decide to play with a premium hand, the pot is usually large and multi-way. On the flop when I hit my hand, I can use the maniac on my left to checkraise and trap the entire field for multiple bets. While playing opportunities are rarer with the maniac on my left, I think the drastic increase in profitability of the situations you encounter makes up for it.

Oct. 27th, 2004 @ 10:55 pm Cards, Day 2
After coming home from p-chem lab today (I did a methanol vapor pressure experiment), I sat down to play a bit. I could only play for about 45 minuets because a friend called me to go out to his office party. It was pretty nice. There was good food and an open bar, and lots of thirty something women with which to flirt.

Anyway, the bad beat jackpot on party was hit, so I was back to playing regular 2/4. I usually look for tables with average pot sizes over 10 BB. While I was waitlisted for several 2/4 games, I noticed a 5/10 game with an average pot size of $104. The waitlist for this table was long, but I added myself just so I could check the average pot size again when there was a seat available.

I started playing 2/4 and had some really intense starting hands dealt to me. In the entire 45 minuet session I was dealt AA four times and KK and QQ once each. I’m not sure about my checkraise on this hand, since it failed to win extra bets like I expected.

Pot 2: 1 BB, returned to Hero.

I guess he wasn’t drawing to a flush if he folded on the turn. I can’t really decide between betting out and going for a checkraise on the flop in this situation. Also, once the button raises, should I just smooth call? I don’t think so, since it’s a pretty big hint that I'm slowplaying. Assuming I go for the checkraise, I have to make MP1 call two cold, since he could easily have a single big diamond. It would be ideal to cold call, and checkraise the button on the turn, forcing MP1 to call two big bets cold rather than two small bets, but I cant risk allowing the button to check behind on the turn for a free card with his lone large diamond (if he has one).

I raised preflop, and when the ace comes on the flop, my heads up opponent checks to me and I bet representing the ace. Then he raises. One of two things is happening: he's finding out if the ace on the board makes me uncomfortable, or he’s flopped two pair or a set. I just didn't feel the second option was plausible enough. If he did indeed flop a hand like that against a heads up opponent who raised before the flop, he has to know that his hand is in very little danger of being beat by the river. Checkraising the turn (on the more expensive street) would clearly be the better option for him. Since he chose to checkraise the flop (on the less expensive street), I thought he was more apt to be testing weather or not the ace on the board scared me.

When the window popped up to tell me my 5/10 seat was available, the pot average was ~$112, so I decided to take a seat. I played pretty tight, but when I got dealt good hands, they tended to hold up. Here's one of the session's many AA hands:

Oct. 27th, 2004 @ 03:59 pm To Set A Pace
The title of the previous entry is flawed. While I'm in the black, I'm not "ahead" unless I'm ahead of some pace. The deadline for the initial stage of this quest is Monday, May 9 2005, since the goal is to graduate the preceding Saturday. Now I have to wonder, how much money will I need by that date?

Obviously I'll need $6000 for ring games (both live and online). Then I'll also need to make enough to cover my expenses until then, and the expense of moving out there and finding a place to rent.

I'll budget for taking out $500 per month to pay credit cards and cover expenses my loan income doesn’t. Times five months is $2500

I'll also budget $1500 for moving, which would cover a Ryder truck and include first/last months rent and security deposit. For those of you who think I'm under budgeted for moving, recall I'll get a short term lease if possible, which might mean subletting a place from some UNLV students (which tends to be pretty cheap). I also have some friends who are interested in going out to Vegas with me for this short trial period. Having multiple people renting should take some of the initial financial move-in burden off of me. Of course as I find a place to rent, and as I withdrawal small bits of money from the bankroll for current living expenses, I'll account for them here to see how good my budget guess was.

So earnings for the quest plus the initial bankroll must add to $10,000. $10,000 minus ~$2000 (the approximate size of the initial bankroll) = 8000. The time period for the quest is 6 remaining days in October of 2004, the first 8 days of May 2005, and 181 days in-between these months, for a total of 195 days.

In the next entry, I'll have some progress to report. Right now I'm off to a Halloween party.

Oct. 26th, 2004 @ 11:52 pm I Take an Early Lead
The session started okay. I intended to 4-table 2/4 bad beat jackpot tables since the jackpot was up around $470,000. I went ahead about $30 early in the session, but then started getting pummeled by some river cards. For example:

Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (10 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is UTG with Kd, Kc.

Hero raises
, 6 folds, Button calls, 1 fold, BB 3-bets, Hero caps, Button calls, BB calls.

Flop: (12.50 SB) 7s, Td, 2s (3 players)

BB checks, Hero bets, Button raises, BB calls, Hero 3-bets, Button calls $2 (All-In), BB calls.

Turn: (10.75 BB) 6c (3 players, 1 all-in)

BB checks, Hero bets, BB raises, Hero calls.

River: (14.75 BB) Jh (3 players, 1 all-in)

BB bets
, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 16.75 BB

Main Pot: 10.75 BB, between Button, BB and Hero. > Pot won by BB (10.75 BB).

Pot 2: 6 BB, between BB and Hero. > Pot won by BB (6 BB).

Results in white below:

BB has Jc Js (three of a kind, jacks).

Hero has Kd Kc (one pair, kings).

Button has Qh Qc (one pair, queens).

Outcome: BB wins 16.75 BB.

At this point the session started to get a little bad. I swung down to $60 under my original buy in. Things turned around quickly. I got dealt some good starting cards and they were either hitting or holding up unimproved. I even made some draws:

Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (6 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is Button with Ts, Ks.

1 fold, MP calls, CO calls, Hero raises, SB calls, BB calls, MP calls, CO calls.

Flop: (10 SB) Jh, 6s, 8s (5 players)

SB checks, BB bets, MP folds, CO calls, Hero calls, SB raises, BB calls, CO calls, Hero calls.

Turn: (9 BB) Jc (4 players)

SB bets
, BB raises to $6.50 (All-In), CO folds, Hero calls, SB raises, Hero calls.

I'm not really sure about my turn play here. Since the bb raises all-in, and his raise is larger than half of the big bet, sb is allowed to reraise behind both of us to make it $10.50 total for me. This is absolutely the worst spot it could happen, since the board paired on this street. So do I call $6.50 (approx. 1.5 BB) which will likely be $10.50 (approx. 2.5 BB), so I can draw to a flush where I'm not even sure if it will be good? I only have one bet to count toward implied pot odds, since I cant comfortably raise with the way sb is playing. So there's 9 BB in the pot. I'll most likely have to call with ~2.5 BB. Since the bb is all-in with 1.5 BB, and I have 1 BB in implied odds, I'm getting 14:2.5 = 5.6:1. I need 4:1 to call if I'm pretty sure my flush will win, but in this situation I am not. The pot is offering me an extra (5.6-4):1 = 1.6:1 that he doesn't have a fullhouse. In other words, he has to have a full house 61% of the time to make my turn call unprofitable. Most of the hands I put him on are a full house, but it is possible that he played top pair with a strange checkraise on the flop. Now that I look back at the hand history, I was the preflop raiser, so he might have been trying to checkraise me on the button to chase out overcards. Now I'm sure he would try this move with many hands which would not be fullhouses: any broadway/Jack combo. I think calling down here is profitable.

River: (15.87 BB) 3s (3 players, 1 all-in)

SB bets
, Hero calls.

Woohoo! Made it, but can only call unfortunately.

Final Pot: 17.87 BB

Main Pot: 13.87 BB, between Hero, SB and BB. > Pot won by Hero (13.87 BB).

Pot 2: 4 BB, between Hero and SB. > Pot won by Hero (4 BB).

Results in white below:

BB has 6d Qd (two pair, jacks and sixes).

Hero has Ts Ks (flush, king high).

Outcome: Hero wins 17.87 BB.

Monetary Goal
My online bankroll must reach $6000 by early May. This is the $6000 capital which will be used for 6/12 through 10/20 limit (and perhaps higher) live games. While in Las Vegas, I will contribute a portion of profit to swell the bankroll to 500 BB for 10/20 ($10,000). This bankroll can also be used online to multitable 3/6 limit games. I will have to extract money from the bankroll during the academic year on occasion, to pay bills and rent that my financial aid money doesn't manage to cover. I plan on recording the amount of financial aid I get, since it will be interesting to know what proportion of my total income poker will represent.

More next time.

Oct. 26th, 2004 @ 04:31 pm Finish One Before You Start The Other
The ultimate goal of this academic year is to get my degree in math and chemistry on time, so I'm free to go to Las Vegas in May. I estimate the starting capital required to be about $7500. To start playing 10/20 at the Mirage with 300 big bets is $6000. The remaining $1500 will be used to move and rent an apartment/house for the first month.

First thing's first... I have to graduate. I'm a bit behind so far this semester. I have a physical chemistry lab on vapor pressures of liquids to turn in in three days. Then I have another due in seven days. Tests in the next week are in inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry. I also have a ton of differential equations assignments to complete. The stress of having things like these for which to prepare certainly hinders playing performance. In addition, not doing well at the tables can sometimes upset the patience required to sit in front of a book and complete an assignment. Hopefully I can use this synergy to balance and succeed in both of these efforts.

Oct. 26th, 2004 @ 12:23 am Student as a Semi-Professional Poker Player?
So I'd like to test this idea out: I'll study full-time, until May of 2005, and complete my undergraduate degree while playing poker for a portion of my income. The objectives will be:
1. Keep a detailed financial and academic record, for the purpose of measuring my progress in balancing both efforts.
2. Review hands, for purpose of analyzing my own play and presenting it to others for critique.
3. Earn as large a portion of my income from poker as possible. I receive loans and grants as a student every semester. Other than loan money for my final spring semester, I want to generate income for plans after college (which I will discuss specifically).
4. Move to Las Vegas for two or more months in May after graduation, for the purpose of playing live and online for a full-time living and possibly entering into a few of the smaller world series events.

Here's my financial situation as I begin:
1. My online bankroll is $2047.60 which I use to play 2/4 limit holdem on Party Poker.
2. My earnings in live games are $1593 since beginning to play in June 2002. My rate in live games is $8.06 per hour at various limits. I do not have a "live bankroll" separate from my checking account, so currently, my ability to play live is dependant on my checking account balance.
3. I have $27,000 total debt from student loans, personal loans, and credit card balances.

Tomorrow I'll outline some goals in more detail, and probably have a small progress report.
